Purpose This short review paper aims to examine the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) in the realm of geotechnical engineering. Design/methodology/approach This paper gives a brief overview of AI/ML technology and discusses its current trend and future directions in geotechnical engineering. Findings Despite limitations, the use of AI/ML techniques has several significant benefits that make them powerful and practical tools in the field of geotechnical engineering. Originality/value This paper explored the integration of AI/ML promising technology into geotechnical design and practice and highlighted its transformative impacts in terms of benefits, limitations and potential future directions.
